Our lives are like clay on a potter’s wheel. Each day, the wheel turns anew, and with our decisions, we shape our lives; we are sculptures formed by choices, vessels crafted by free will. Your life: your masterpiece, your unique creation. While it’s true that we all must decide for ourselves what shape our lives should take, I offer you these 7 tips for living your best life.

1. Live within Your Means

No matter how you want to shape the clay of your life, you’ll need resources; the more you save, the more you’ll have. Overspending is truly one of the most damaging things you can do because it robs you of the means to live a life of your own design.

Besides, the emotional high that comes from buying something new is short-lived and cannot compensate for the emotional burden of carrying too much debt or the painful reality of all the opportunities you can no longer afford.

Before you make a purchase that seriously impacts your bottom line, stop and ask yourself: Is this improving my life? Is this worth it? It’s a shame how so many of us sell our potential for the empty promise of useless things.

2. Follow Your Dreams

Do you love your job? If not, why in the world are you doing it? The most common answer is bills. We need money to live; we need a job for money; therefore, we work to survive.

But the survival instinct is the basest of human motivations, and you could be so much more if you aimed higher. Yes, most of us must work to live, but there are a million jobs in the world. Why not choose one that satisfies you? Why not determine what you want, figure out how to make money with it, and go for it?

If you think chasing your dreams is hard, consider how much harder it is to work in an uninspiring job for thirty years, wasting away in a cycle of mindless production and consumption. Do something you love. Make a difference you believe in.

3. Connect

Personal relationships are the jewel of life. We’re social by nature; we can only be so happy alone. So why do we sacrifice relationships for jobs? Why do we push people away when we could be pulling them closer?

We’re so much happier when we attract a soul mate; when we bridge arguments calmly; communicate ideas confidently, without offending; when we surround ourselves with caring people.

Great accomplishments require great relationships.

4. Contribute

Our potential is revealed in the extent to which we give. And I’m not just talking about charity. For most of us, work is our primary means of contribution to society and our single most time consuming activity; this, combined with the fact that humans need each other, is the reason why jobs feel so much better when they allow us to contribute to the world in a way that is uniquely our own: We give our gift; others express appreciation; we too endorse our contribution, and the end result is that we feel good.

You can also contribute to the world by volunteering, helping a family member, or donating. The world needs you, and you need it. Give back. Receive joy.

5. Trust Yourself

Learning to trust your instincts when reading road signs on the highway of life will improve your chances of success in every endeavor. You can also learn to trust yourself in less esoteric ways: Raise your self-esteem by recognizing your accomplishments; boost your self-efficacy by practicing the skills required to reach success.

Creating a life of your own beautiful design requires that you believe in what you’re doing, as well as your ability to do it.

6. Optimize

There’s always something you could do better, faster, or cheaper. Pick an area of yourself to work on and have at it. The clay spinning on the potter’s wheel of life can only be worked into the shape of a masterpiece through continuous improvement, prolonged dedication to excellence.

7. Be Thankful

The fact that we recognize our shortcomings (so we can improve them) does not mean we can’t be thankful for all the wonderful things we already are; all the gifts we already possess. Life is the greatest gift of all, so we should all be thankful for the breath in our lungs, and I’m sure you can think of a few other blessings if you set your mind to it.

An attitude of gratitude is powerful because it helps us recognize our gifts, our talents, which helps us feel comfortable with our place in the world and highlights the unique contributions waiting to spring forth from within us, making the world a better place and leading us toward our dreams.

So there you have it: 7 tips for shaping and polishing a life of your own magnificent design.

Do you know people who spend and spend even when they are broke? One woman I know had a habit of maxing out her credit cards on luxury items and then complaining about her lack of money. She was perpetually two months late on her utility bills, but that never stopped her from charging a shiny new purse or whatever else she just had to have. Her home was in foreclosure. She was in real danger of losing her equity and ending up on the street. In the midst of this financial hurricane, her car broke down. Her mechanic said the cost of repair exceeded that of replacement, so on to top of everything else, she suddenly needed to come up with enough money to buy a new car.

But she didn’t feel bad. After all, this was an opportunity to go shopping! She hit the used car lots on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and quickly narrowed her selection down to two vehicles, the first an affordable economy car, the second an expensive SUV. Which do you think she bought? That’s right, the SUV.

When gas prices rose in 2006, she could barely afford to drive to work. As of the date of this writing, she sometimes has to stay home because she cannot afford to refuel the monster sitting in her driveway.

Necessity vs. Desire

You cannot be financially mature until you clearly understand the difference between necessity and desire. This woman needed transportation, but desired a status-symbol.

Trouble with Credit Cards

Many people get themselves into trouble with credit cards. The #1 mistake they make is treating their line of credit as income supplementation. So let’s agree right here that credit cards are not part of your income. That line of credit? That’s not your money. That money belongs to the lending institution, and you will have to pay it back. If you have a habit of getting in over your head with those little plastic cards, remember my motto: If you can’t afford to buy it with cash, you can’t afford to put it on the card. Period.

If you’ve proven you can be responsible with plastic, you have additional leeway; otherwise, heed my motto. If you absolutely must charge something you cannot afford due to an emergency, check out my credit card article for additional advice.

Spending money you don’t have is like running with scissors or sticking your fingers into an electric outlet. If you’re like most healthy adults, your mother no longer warns you not to do stupid things. So who is going to stop you from getting in over your head? Who is going to stop you from allowing your obligations to exceed your capacities? You are. That’s who.

The stress that results from overextending yourself stems from two basic causes: spending too much, and doing too much. Spending too much, the obvious affliction effecting our friend with the SUV, involves the purchase of items you cannot afford. Doing too much involves the overcommitment of cognitive, physical, or emotional energies. To keep from getting in over your head in either of these two areas, listen to your stress triggers. And learn to say No.

If you have trouble controlling credit card debt, I have a simple rule for you:If you can’t afford to pay for an item with cash, you can’t afford to pay for it with plastic either. If an emergency forces you to buy something you cannot afford (it happens, I know), make sure you are brutally honest in your assessment of what you really need. If you don’t need something, don’t charge it. I know people who pay 18% interest on Hostess Twinkies. Come on now. You know better.

The most common mistake consumers make with credit cards is using them as income supplementation. Instead of using them for emergencies or convenience, they use them as additional salary. So let’s agree right now that credit is not salary. Credit belongs to a lending institution. Credit must be repaid.

How Much Debt is Too Much?

Financial gurus suggest that total debt, excluding first mortgage, should not exceed 20% of take-home pay. This includes car payments, home equity loans, second mortgages, credit card debt, and so forth. Upper income consumers may be able to handle higher debt loads due to greater expendable income, while lower income consumers may be wise to carry less.

Of course, you probably know if your debt load is too high without whipping out your calculator. If you honestly don’t know, here is another rule of thumb: If you can’t pay off your credit card balance in full every month, you have too much debt. Credit cards, when used responsibly, help shift the timing or increase the ease of making payments – They do not exist so you can run up debt you cannot pay.

Why Do You Buy?

The buying impulse is so strong in some people that they actually believe credit card dept is their only option. Telling these people they don’t need that extra purse, pair of shoes, or suit is like telling them they don’t need food or water.

A close friend of mine used to struggle with spending. She could barely pay her utility bills and was always borrowing money from friends to keep the electricity from getting shut off. Despite her obvious lack of funds, she somehow managed to keep her closet stocked with new clothes. And there always seemed to be a new package showing up on her front porch containing things she’d purchased from the Home Shopping Network.

She tried to justify these purchases by saying, “John, you know I need to buy new clothes so I can look professional when I’m at the office.”

Well, yes, it’s important to appear professional, but she did not need to buy expensive clothing every week.

Eventually, my friend was forced to declare bankruptcy. I still remember her sitting there on her sofa, surrounded by shoes still in the box and clothes still tagged. She looked at me and said, “John, I don’t think I bought any of this stuff because I needed it. I bought it because I thought it would make me feel good.”

“Did it make you feel good?” I asked.

She paused, touching her chin. “I thought it did at the time. Now, seeing all this stuff I never used, I guess not.”

The emotional high that comes from buying something new is short-lived and cannot compensate for the emotional burden of carrying too much debt.

But What if You Really Do Need It?

Yes, there are times in life when credit can help you out of a jam. The key is being honest about what you need. The first step toward the responsible use of credit is learning to differentiate between necessity and desire.

The second step is treating every credit purchase like the debt that it is. Always pay more than the minimum payment. Dedicate yourself to getting rid of that debt as quickly as you can. Instead of throwing a few extra bones toward the payment whenever you can swing it, actually sit down and draft a timeline for expedient payment.

If you take your debts seriously, you’ll pay them off more quickly, pay less interest, and be in a better position the next time you need to finance something.

Assalamu ‘Alaikum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Alhamdulillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen, Wabihee Nasta’eenu ‘Aalaa Umuuriddunya Waddeen, Wassalaatu Wassalamu ‘Alaa Asyrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidinaa Muhammadin, Wa’alaa Aalihee Wasahbihee Ajma’een, Waba’du

Sekian, Wabillahit Taugeq Walhidayah, Wassalaamu ‘Alaikum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh.

Bersempena Majlis Ilmu Sempena Hari Keputeraan Baginda Yang Ke-61 Tahun

Pada Hari Selasa 9hb Rejab 1428 24hb Julai 2007

Assalamulaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

Alhamdulillahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen, Wabihee Nasta’eenu ‘Alaa Umuuriddunya Wadeen, Wassalaatu Wassalaamu’Alaa Asyrafil Mursaleen Sayyidina Muhammaddin Wa’alaa Aalihiee Wasahbihee Ajma’een Waba’du

Wabillahit Taufeq Walhidayah. Wassalamu ‘Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle?

10% of your life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean? We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be arriving late, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine this 90%. How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light, but you can control your reaction. Don’t let people fool you. YOU can control how you react. Let’s take an example.

You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens next will be determined by how you react. You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work. You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home. When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter. Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?

a) Did the coffee cause it?

b) Did your daughter cause it?

c) Did the policeman cause it?

d) Did you cause it?

The answer is “d”. You had no control over what happened with the coffee. How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day.

Here is what could have and should have happened. Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, “It’s ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time”. Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having. Notice the difference?

Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended differently. Why? Because of how you REACTED. You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction. Here are some ways to apply the 90/10 principle.

If someone says something negative about you, don’t be a sponge. Let the attack roll off like water on glass. You don’t have to let the negative comment affect you! React properly and it will not ruin your day. A wrong reaction could result in losing a friend, being fired, getting stressed out, etc.

How do you react if someone cuts you off in traffic? Do you lose your temper? Pound on the steering wheel? A friend of mine had the steering wheel fall off. Do you curse? Does your blood pressure skyrocket? Do you try and bump them? WHO CARES if you arrive ten seconds later at work? Why let the cars ruin your drive?

Remember the 90/10 principle, and do not worry about it. You are told you lost your job. Why lose sleep and get irritated? It will work out. Use your worrying energy and time into finding another job.

The plane is late; it is going to mangle your schedule for the day. Why take out your frustration on the flight attendant? She has no control over what is going on. Use your time to study, get to know the other passenger.

The 90-10 principle is incredible. Very few know and apply this principle. The result? Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache.

Why get stressed out? It will just make things worse.

Sometimes we just need to be reminded!

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by

holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked,

“Who would like this $20 bill?”

Hands started going up.

He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you
but first, let me do this.

He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill.

He then asked, “Who still wants it?”

Still the hands were up in the air.

Well, he replied, “What if I do this?”

And he dropped it on the ground

and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.

He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty.

“Now, who still wants it?”

Still the hands went into the air.

My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson.

No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it

because it did not decrease in value.

It was still worth $20.

Many times in our lives,

we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt

by the decisions we make and

the circumstances that come our way.

We feel as though we are worthless.

But no matter what has happened or

what will happen, you will never lose your value.
Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased,

you are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you.

The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know,

but by WHO WE ARE and WHOSE WE ARE.

You are special- Don’t EVER forget it.”

If you do not pass this on, you may never know the

lives it touches, the hurting hearts it speaks to,
or the hope that it can bring.

Count your blessings, not your problems.

“And remember: amateurs built the ark ..
professionals built the Titanic.

If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it.

Sempena Hari Raya ‘Idil Fitri Tahun 1427 Hijrah / 2006 Masihi

Assalamu ‘Alaikum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh

Bismillahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Alhamdulillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalameen, Wabihee Nasta’eenu ‘Aalaa Umuuriddunya waddeen, Wassalaatu Wassalamu ‘Alaa Asyrafil Mursaleen, Sayyidinaa Muhammadin, Wa’alaa Aalihee Wasahbihee Ajma’een, Waba’du

Allahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar,
Walillahil Hamd.

Amin

Sekian, Wabillahit Taugeq Walhidayah, Wassalaamu ‘Alaikum Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh.
